Green Bay Packers Receive Solid 2024 Offseason Grade
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Over the last few offseasons, the Green Bay Packers have undergone a massive youth movement. Each year some long-time veterans of the team have been moved on from, cleaning up the salary cap and creating opportunities for younger players to step into.

Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers and Mason Crosby are just a few of the big-named veterans who have departed in recent offseason. 2024 was no different, as the team said goodbye to David Bakhtiari, De’Vondre Campbell and Jon Runyan Jr.

Replacing those veterans will be easier said than done. But, Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has done a solid job filling the holes on the roster. The team was aggressive early in free agency, making a few splash signings and addressing needs during the 2024 NFL Draft.

In the opinion of analyst Trevor Sikkema on PFF, that has resulted in a solid grade for the team this offseason. He has given the Green Bay Packers a B for the work they did with their roster the last few months.

“It was an up-and-down free agency period for the Packers, but I ultimately think they came out slightly on top. They lost Jon Runyan, Darnell Savage and Aaron Jones but added Josh Jacobs (who is younger than Jones) and Xavier McKinney.

Draft picks Jordan Morgan, Edgerrin Cooper, Javon Bullard and Marshawn Lloyd can all be contributing players at positions of need,” Sikkema wrote.

It was easy to see where the points of emphasis were for the team this offseason. They had to address some depth issues along the offensive line, which they attacked often in the draft with three selections.

The safety position has been a weak point defensively for years, but that will no longer be the case. Xavier McKinney was a big signing and the team used three draft picks on versatile safeties as well.

At linebacker, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley is set to make major changes. Going from a 3-4 base under Joe Barry to a 4-3 base means positional changes for some guys and the need for three-down linebackers. As Sikkema noted, Edgerrin Cooper will fill that void.

The Green Bay Packers have a few question marks heading into offseason workouts, but this is a strong roster that has been put together. Their young roster will be looking to take another step forward after a successful 2023 campaign.
